“Old soul.” That’s what they say.

His dad was a drummer. His mother and sisters sang. But what makes a boy growing up in a land of bluegrass into a Blues Man has to come from somewhere other than familiar external forces.

It comes from within the man.

He credits Jimmy Page but Jimmy didn’t make him go in search of the origins of the songs Led Zepplin covered. What he found when he went looking was Otis Rush, Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, and the Three Kings, Freddie, Albert, and B.B., many gone long before Jacob Johnson Hipps picked up a guitar.

Their music lives on in the set list of J.J. Hipps and The Hideaway, The Blues at their most pure, most honored, most revered played by a self taught steward of cultural history, an old soul born to find his way to strings…

…and keep alive the iconic and uniquely American music form from which flow the rivers of rock ‘n roll.

Thank God for old souls.
